Underappreciated Podcast: CR Avery on Sonny Boy Williamson and graffiti

Written by

CR AveryCR Avery is an East-Vancouver based slam poet, musician, writer, beat boxer, painter and all around virtuosic performance motherfucker. I've interviewed him previously about his totem figures. Now this is his look at those things we undervalue: graffiti tags, the original versions of songs that come to be better known by better known artists, blues players Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson, and Toronto singer/songwriter (and Beams contributor) Corin Raymond

Listen to the podcast here.

Is the same interview originally recorded for Totem Figures last year?

Then I'm not going crazy. It didn't sound familiar. The young fans in our house wondered why CR is holding a cigarette. They consider this a sign that he is not trustworthy. O asked if he was infamous.

Well, he certainly enjoys a smoke. I hope the young fans in your house at least enjoyed the harmonica music, and Corin's songs.

Since they've heard so much Andrew Bird, they were confused by the vocal scratching and beatboxing on the first CR song. He has to be seen live to appreciate his mastery of the microphone.

That opening track is on youtube, and if you click the song title in the write-up on the page (Bring Me Lil Water Silvee) a box pops out of the bottom left corner of the screen, and you can see him in action. It really does add a nice dimension.
