Phil Collins recently announced his retirement, claiming:
I don't think anyone's going to miss me. I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think, 'I can't be in the same business as this. I don't really belong to that world...I'm much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely."
I hope Phil Collins is happy, but I can think of a number of artists who are going to miss Phil, most especially in the genre of rap.
Below are a number of rap hits (including one with Phil himself on vocals!!!) incorporating the work of the genius Collins.
Please Note: given the stylistics of hip hop consider all of the following videos to contain some how shall I say, 'sharp' language? Join us after the jump and kick up the mutha f#@!in' sound. Each video is followed by a link to the Collins original.
First up, the ultra classic 2Pac sample of Phil's amazing hit "In the Air Tonight" on his record 'Starin' Through my Rearview":
For the original, click here. In the Air Tonight is also referenced in Eminem's magisterial Stan ("Remember that Phil Collins song In the Air on the Night about that one guy who could have saved that other guy from drowning"...click here for Em dropping some love for PC).
How about an 80s epic heartbreak hit turned rap memorial? Cuban Link brings a sample and a Alvin & the Chipmunks-esque speed up Collins backdrop to remember Big Pun.
For Phil's original Against All Odds (Take A Look at Me Now), click here.
Next up, Ol' Dirty Bastard (aka Dirt McGirt, aka Lil' Baby Jesus) of the Wu Tang brings a funkdafied version of Sussudio.
Phil's original here.
Last but certainly not least (my personal favorite), Phil himself dropping those sweet vocals with Bone Thug's n Harmony on the mutha f#@!in' anthem: Home (sampled from Phil's classic Take Me Home). Bone loved Phil so much they nicknamed him Chrome Bone, officially adopting him into the Bone Thugs family. Turn this one up.
Phil's original here and another great version of that one here.
