Optimism as Social Control- Barabara Ehrenreich

Written by

This video below is a companion piece to TJ's latest article called Positive Thinking Won't Save Us, which draws insights from Barbara Ehrenreich's book Bright-sided: How Positive Thinking is Undermining America. Here she expands on the topic of how the ethos of positive thinking was absorbed into the coporate world, and how it contributed to the financial crisis of 2007. As always with these RSA Animate series of videos, the combination of images and words brings the ideas to life in new and powerful ways. (TJ gave an intriguing possible reason for this phenomenon, which you can read here).

This is a truly excellent summary of the book. If anyone likes what's presented here, I really recommend buying and reading Brightsided in its entirety - the ideas are well fleshed out there, with even more examples, and further ramifications of relentless Positive Thinking. It's also funny. And short.

Barbara Ehrenreich is a thorough researcher, an engaging writer and a sharp thinker whom I'll be quoting more and more on this site.
