Bonus: Bill Simmons' piece just out today on the death of Randy 'The Macho Man' Savage is also awesome. As a giant fan of wrestling from the 80s golden era, I'm right on with what Simmons has to say. Others (e.g. Koko Beware, Jack the Snake) had various gimmicks. But it was Macho Man (and Hulk Hogan) who realized the key was connecting with the crowd--perfecting the catch phrases, call and response with the fans, and nailing the ring side interview.
