Playing Word Trump

Written by

Google’s word-frequency trend application program, called the nGram viewer, is interesting to play around with. Today I played a game I call “word trump” – you try to see what words have similar trajectories, and which words trump them. I was interested in the key words that I share with the integral community, and perhaps with folks that like to read this blog. In the end, I came up with this progression that seemed meaningful.  The motivation I had for playing this word game was to map the key words that point to the multiple process streams in our narratives.  For more on what that means, see my recent article at Integral Leadership Review.

What do you all think?

1. Democracy trumps Evolution. Evolution trumps Integral

2. Revolution trumps all of the above

3. Systems far out does all of the above.

4. Population trumps Systems, with Health and Economy in the game.

graph4

5. Development trumps all of the above.

6. War can significantly trump all of the above, but shows up erratically and is in its steepest decline.

graph6

7. People and Life are on a similar playing field, above all the rest.

Coda: After writing this, I found that changing systems (plural) to system (singular) resulted in an interesting mirror-image relationship between people and system.

    Coooool!

But sadly Love and Peace are on the decline:-(
Or maybe they're on the rise so people need to write about them less?
(by the way, Wishful thinking is not on the rise)

Work trumped all of the above in 1920.

Me was a joker until 1980.
But You is even more used.
Me and You dance side by side until 1970 and then You steadily increased the distance between You and Me:-( damn You!

Enlightenment is constantly on the rise even threatening Meditation in 1920 and 1940 but by 2000 meditation was clearly more important again. Meditation overtook Prayer in the late fifties and who'd have thought: when there is less Prayer and less Love there's more Sex!

Change is on the rise. Hope is in decline. Fear is also lessening but that's hardly surprising since the Devil is also in retreat!

In fact it appears that God got the upper hand on the Devil around 1870 and shortly after this: less Angels were needed!

Buddha became clearly more interesting than Jesus around 1960 and was way ahead by 2000.

Wilber goes on a mad accent somewhere in the mid nineties, similar to that of Rajneesh in the seventies, who comes crashing down in the eighties. So, careful Wilber! However, Osho and Wilber rise together, along with Chopra but none of them can mess with Oprah! (not even Michael Jordan;-)

Ah... ...after 2000 and Love, Peace and Prayer take an upturn and Hope is there to join them:-)(Hand in hand with less Nazi!)
