Lessons in Life: Bass Playing

Written by

A friend of mine posted this video a few weeks back on his Facebook page.  Not only did I laugh my arse off, I thought this dude's advice on being a better bass player could be extended more broadly to the spiritual life.

Warning:  Profanity-Laced Hilarity and Strong Sexual Discussion Ensue.

Now brother breaks it down into three simple points:

1. Own your space

2. Move around on stage

3. Have tight-ass jeans on and show your "stuff" for the ladies.

Now I think we could extend those ideas to the spiritual life:

1. Owning one's space = Presence

The spiritual life begins with a capacity to hold Wakefulness, The Witness of All reality.  A sense of Pure Consciousnes, Deep Holy Presence.  Only in such a space is there is freedom and the possibility for free choice.

2. Move around on stage = Bodily Manifestation

Certain spiritual traditions tend to stop at simply awakening to Wakefulness.  As brother shows us a certain solidity is important (owning your space), but then once you have (or perhaps are) this space, you need to do something with it.  The Presence opens a space, but bodily manifestation is what it occurs within that Presence.

3. Tight ass Jeans = Embodying Sexuality and Creativity

One of the most important elements of bodily manifestation is of course sexuality.  Sexuality becomes a metahpor for spiritual awakening and most certainly as a form of creativity:  sexuality can lead of course to pro-creativity.

If a being holds Wakefulness and then opens bodily to that Presence, they will become attractive and creative. It's at this point that my analogy breaks down as brother is only interested in one night stands with 18 year old girls.

But you get the idea.  1. Awakening  2. Bodily Embrace  3. Creativity/Sexuality
