The Dark Side of the Womb

Tonight’s Jukebox introduces an upcoming theme week: The Dark Side of the Womb

We’re going into the shadows...into women’s fights, women’s plights and the lies we tell ourselves about how moral and superior women are. Say Wha?!

Coming next week in Those Crazy Bitches, we’ll be looking at women and anger. A bit of Rage anyone? How about the suppression of it? Who better to kick this thing off than Ani Difranco? In Pixie she tells us “I’m a chipper, cheerful free-for-all and I light up a room. I’m a colour me happy girl, just live and let live, and when they’re out for blood, I’ll always give”. Here’s a theme song for anyone who plays by the rule ‘just suck up and be nice’.

If Women Ruled the World...and other Gender Myths...Br. Bergen goes debunking. If any of the points he’ll be making gets you all rattled, so will this atrocity by Beyonce! I don’t blame you if you don’t watch the whole thing. I mean, after all, you might be inspired to go get some gold stilettos, take off your clothes, shake your tits and run a nation. Girl Power! Yeah! (Insert eye roll and resigned sigh here.)

Women vs. Women...Br. TJ will take us through a compelling essay.  While filing through the dozens of appropriate songs that could express this theme, I was left wondering, do women have anything to fight about besides men? Goodness there’s a lot of music where one lady’s competing with another for a guy. But this one is by far the funniest! Go go Julie Brown, show that bitch who’s boss and hold on to your man prize!

Thanks Vanessa. Here's to respectful, engaged dialogue!

Chela, you're right - there are so many songs about hostility between women, and almost all of them seem to be over a man. In a podcast I listen to - Slate Spoilers Specials - the two critics, both women, expressed gratitude that the main conflict in the recent movie Bridesmaids, although it's between women, isn't over a guy at all. Excellent movie, by the way.

Also, just to throw it out there. I am totally looking forward to reading these articles! But was wondering if there was any concern amidst the Beams crew that focusing on female shadow for a whole week could potentially lead to a lop-sided or biased perspective? Perhaps following it up with a week on male shadow, or a week on female gifts could offer a calibrated balance? Or maybe you already address this in the articles.

Either way, I'm looking forward to it! I'm sure there will be some stellar content and some great dialogue to ensue...

    Men don't have shadows.

Don't worry the posts this week (at least the one's i've read so far) aren't really about the female shadow - at least in the way your past two pieces have been V. They're more like observations on women and culture in general. The ones that do critique are pretty light and positive on the whole. But if you disagree - be sure to let us know! :)

Cool, I look forward to them.

Yeah, I'm a madlover of shadow :) Juicy stuff~ although I think my articles are equally about women's potential...

And trust me, men have shadows :) Nice try...

    Cheers
