Which 12 Words Describe Your Favourite Music?

Written by

Here's a great online resource covering all things to do with music: allmusic.com. Type in the name of any artist. Any album. Any song. Allmusic knows it, can tell you about it, provide samples, sell it to you, and offer myriad links to do with Radiohead's entry at allmusic.comit.

Let's start with someone you probably know about: Radiohead. The main page for the band gives you an overview, and you can click for more detailed sub-pages featuring the band's Biography (in a few paragraphs), Discography (click on any album title for track listings, short audio samples, credits, chart rankings and awards nominated for and/or won and a review), Songs (lists of all their songs and every album those songs appear on, including covers), Credits (everyone who's worked with them on any song or album), Charts & Awards.

Back to the main Radiohead page. It lists who they've played with, who they're influenced by, who they've influenced, similar artists. And of course you can click on any of those names and get their full story and credits and links.

It lists the genres they play in, the styles, and possibly my favourite detail on the whole site: Moods.

How would you describe the various moods of Radiohead's music? Could you? Allmusic can. Here's their list:

You can click on any of those terms (I just chose "sprawling" at random) and you're taken to a page for that term. For "sprawling," it suggests similar moods: Aggressive, Cathartic, Druggy, Energetic, Indulgent, Rousing, Trippy - and more. Top Artists for "Sprawling" include Beastie Boys, Pavement, The Band, Genesis, Wu-Tang Clan. Top Albums for Sprawling include Exile on Main St. - the Rolling Stones, Mellow Gold - Beck, Tales from Topographic Oceans - Yes.

This is a web of information it'd take a lifetime to exhaust.

Alright, I'll play. Pretty much my favorite musical artist is Bruce Springsteen. The words to describe his music are actually pretty great, quite spot on.

I'll play too. Van Morrison is to me what Bruce is to Trev and the words are actually pretty great, quite spot on. Though as an Enneagram 8, I probably veil some of them.

"Autumnal" comes up a fair bit in searches I've done of artists I like. I've never once described music with that word, although the page for "Autumnal" lists some artists I'm into, or have been into for periods: Nick Drake, John Fahey, Elliott Smith, Phil Ochs, Simon & Garfunkel, Hank Williams. And there are some I know little or nothing about: Galaxie 500, Moby Grape, Tim Buckley, Chappaquiddick Skyline, the Walker Brothers, Carnival of Light. And some I know of, but haven't been hugely into: Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, The Beatles, Elton John, Merle Haggard.
