A big thanks to Bergen for offering this video as a contrast to the William S. Burroughs piece below. I had searched for something in a different register to juxtapose with it, but couldn't find one I was happy with. This beautiful piece by Brother Steindl-Rast does the job very well. When I watch the two together, it makes me wonder how to go about integrating those two voices together. In Burrough's piece I resonate with an unflinching look into the dark underbelly of life and human society, and a courageous rejection of many of the cultural myths and self-delusions that often provide screens for that darkness. But how does one go about not getting a hardened, cynical heart from this critical cry, this brave peering into the full depths of what's been? How does one simultaneously remain open and embracing, grateful and full of awe as Br. Steindl-Rast so powerfully attests to? How do I still say yes? Bergen suggests "living from the second, while keeping the first in mind". That sounds like a good start, and a worthy post-postmodern practice.

To give credit where it's due, I first saw "A Good Day" video here:
http://beyondawakeningseries.com/blog/terry-patten/happy-thanksgiving/
But serendipitously, when I went back to retrieve the link today, I found something even more relevant on the site.
It seems that Terry Patten and colleagues are currently having the exact same conversation we are(!)right now:
http://www.integralspiritualpractice.com/blog/evolutionary-activism-a-bodhidharma-strategy
I'll let the piece speak for itself because it's excellent and attempts to address this very point we're grappling with - enlightened response in an imperfect world. Terry calls it Evolutionary Activism and offers a 3-part strategy. Check it out.
