Songs About the Moon

Written by

the moon, redI’ve always been enchanted by the moon. When I was a kid, sometimes I’d stay up really late, lean out my window, and stare up at a bright moonlit sky. It was a symbol of all the life happening out there beneath that beautiful moon. It was such a thrill to imagine what was happening out there. All that spirit, the excitement, the energy, the lights, love, romance, beauty, the moonmusic, art, all happening under that very same moon. A life I wasn’t old enough for then. One that there was no sign of in my sleepy suburb. I was too young to have the language to describe it then, but I knew it was there. I could feel it. Thanks to the moon.

The human connection to moon runs deep. The moon's gravity keeps the Earth spinning at the right speed and angle to provide the sort of stability necessary for the long and successful the moon over a cityscapedevelopment of life. That’s good news for us. It's believed that about 4.5 billion years ago a Mars sized object slammed into Earth, blowing out enough material to create the moon from debris. So the moon may actually be of the Earth. Not to mention its affect on the tides, women’s cycle. But, even without knowing any of that stuff, we’re still just as captivated! There’s just something innate about our connection the moon. We’re so inspired by that round glowing rock in our night sky that it makes its way into our fables, our folklore, our art, and of course, our music.

painting of the moon, by Eric KirkwoodSongs about the moon. Songs with something beautiful about the moon in them. Songs written under moon. There are just so many. They probably span many years and cultures too. I’ve chosen a few from own collection, and I’d love to hear what other songs about the moon people have in their collection, or in their hearts. But before we get to the music, here’s my favourite lyric about the moon:

I wonder how the same moon outside this Chinatown fair,

Could look down on Illinois, and find you there.

-Shore Leave, Tom Waits

On that note, let’s start with a man who seems to have a longstanding relationship with the moon.

Drunk On the Moon - Tom Waits.

I Wish I Was The Moon. - Neko Case.

Neko Case expresses her desire to be the moon!

Sail To Moon - Radiohead.

Radiohead’s moody and melodic piece about sailing to the moon. Who hasn’t fantasized about that?

    Great jukebox topic, Lindsey!

    I'll resist creating a long list of songs, and focus on just one. The perfect rendition of one of Rodgers and Hart's most perfect songs, "Blue Moon," was done by Tony Bennett. A very sensitive interpretation, with excellent, understated support from Ruby Braff on cornet, and George Barnes on guitar.

    still love this song...such great lyrics

    ~~~
    I pictured a rainbow
    you held it in your hands
    I had flashes
    but you saw the plan
    I wandered out in the world for years
    while you just stayed in your room
    I saw the crescent
    you saw the whole of the moon!
    The whole of the moon!
    You were there at the turnstiles
    with the wind at your heels
    You stretched for the stars
    and you know how it feels
    To reach too high
    too far
    Too soon
    you saw the whole of the moon!
    I was grounded
    while you filled the skies
    I was dumbfounded by truth
    you cut through lies
    I saw the rain-dirty valley
    you saw Brigadoon
    I saw the crescent
    you saw the whole of the moon!
    I spoke about wings
    you just flew
    I wondered, I guessed, and I tried
    you just knew
    I sighed
    but you swooned
    I saw the crescent
    you saw the whole of the moon!
    The whole of the moon!
    With a torch in your pocket
    and the wind at your heels
    You climbed on the ladder
    and you know how it feels
    To GET too high
    too far
    Too soon
    you saw the whole of the moon!
    The whole of the moon!
    Unicorns and cannonballs,
    palaces and piers,
    Trumpets, towers, and tenements,
    wide oceans full of tears,
    Flags, rags, ferry boats,
    scimitars and scarves,
    Every precious dream and vision
    underneath the stars
    You climbed on the ladder
    with the wind in your sails
    You came like a comet
    blazing your trail
    Too high
    too far
    Too soon
    you saw the whole of the moon!
