What's Holding You? A Meditation in Trust

The bad news is you’re falling through the air, nothing to hang on to, no parachute.
The good news is there’s no ground.

trust2This human life is a bit of a whirlwind. So much is unknown, uncontrollable. We can’t really plan for this gig, this dance, this shit show of inhabiting the planet Earth. If you follow my work, you probably know I’m an Integral Coach™. While working through a rigorous development program, each of us, at some point gets confronted with the massive dilemma of trust. Trusting ourselves, trusting others, trusting that change occurs, trusting that which is unknown or yet to be revealed.

Over the past couple of months, I have been re-purposing a trust meditation with several clients and have started to do it myself and so this Sacred Sunday morning, I’d like to share it with you and do it together. Here we’re going to feel into that which is holding us, that which we can deeply trust to hold us. Such sensing of that which is trustable, that which is holding us may allow for more full and awake engagement with that which is the bottomless, free fall of life.

First let us feel that which feels incomplete, unstable or in some way causing us anxiety. Feel into the flutter or rush or contraction of that which is not handled, that which breeds fear about the future.

Now, let us feel our bottoms. Feel the sensation of your bottom as it makes contact with whatever you’re sitting on. Feel how you trust this seat to hold you there. Breathe and relax into the ‘sure thing’ that this seat is, holding you.

Now let us feel our feet on the ground. I can feel the texture of the carpet against the bottom of my feet and that my fourth toes are lifted. I’m pressing them into the floor. Experience the sturdiness of the floor as you make contact with it. Feel the floor holding the chair that is holding your body. Let us feel what we trust about this.

trustNow, we’re going to expand what we’re holding in our awareness. Keep the physical sensation of your bottom being held, your feet on the ground in your awareness, while becoming aware of the structure that is holding the floor that is holding the seat that is holding you. Feel the trustworthiness of this structure.

Now let’s feel the Earth holding all that is holding us. While we feel the steadiness of the sensation of being held in this seat, we also feel the flux of the Earth. The living and dying and moving quality of nature that is happening in and around and beneath us. Let us feel this flux, what is trustworthy about this flux while also feel it holding us.

Next let us expand our awareness out even further to that which holds this planet in time and space. Let us allow ourselves to trust in what is holding this planet. Feel what’s holding us and feel it right in the sensation of your baby toe and the base of your spine.

Let us feel, here together, that we’re collectively being held in great mystery. While there is flux and chance and death and uncertainty, we are held, in the most direct way with this chair, this seat, and in a mysterious expanse. Let us feel how we trust that expanse. Let us feel how we’re in this together and held together and that we can trust that.
